Tanzania Safari: Serengeti National Park

Day 11:

We drove from Lake Manyara through Ngrongoro conservation area in order to get to Serengeti National Park.  On the way, we drove up and along the rim of the Ngorongoro crater where it was completely misty and fogged in on one side and then clear on the other side where we had some nice views down into the crater below with it's salt flat, salt lake, and 2 freshwater lakes.

We then quickly descended down to the vast, endless plain that is the Serengeti.  We had a brief stop at the main gate for lunch and a short walk up a hill for a panoramic view of the Serengeti.

Immediately after entering the park, we were treated to a really close view of a family of lions with really young cubs right by the road.  The rest of the afternoon, we game drove through the Serengeti enroute to our campsite, which was inside the park.

Day 12:
We had a full day game drive in the park.  The Serengeti is absolutely amazing!  It looks like the typical African savannah of your imagination.  Grasslands with sparse acacia trees and a river running through it.  This time of year, the wildebeest and zebra have migrated to the Kenya side of the border; however, there is still PLENTY of other wildlife.  The river was teeming with hippos, and we even some some Nile crocodiles.  We also saw a crazy amount of cats.  So, so many lions.  And the lions all seemed to be quite active.  We watched some lions stalk, but not get close enough to, some buffalo.  We also saw some elephants chase off some lions who were getting too close.  We saw lots of families of lions with cubs.  It was crazy how many lions we saw.  We also saw a cheetah in the morning and a leopard in the grass that eventually jumped up and climbed a tree.  The sunsets through the acacia trees are quite stunning in the wide open landscape of the Serengeti.

Day 13:
We left our campsite in the morning and did a game drive as we left the park.  On the way we caught a glimpse of a Caracal, which is a small cat that is quite rare to see.
